Abstract:
The aim of this article is to explore the spatial patterns of electoral support for candidates in the 2013 direct presidential election in the Czech Republic. Firstly, variability in the election results is analysed. After which, the effect of socioeconomic variables on the results of candidates is tested using regression analysis. By means of regression analysis we are able to explain a considerable proportion of the spatial differences affecting candidates’ election results, as identified in the initial section of the article. Finally, our results are compared with theoretical assumptions and findings from previous research in the field of electoral geography in the Czech Republic.

Abstract:
Even if almost every country is dealing with some kind of discontentment with its electoral system, the area of electoral reforms belongs to less developed ones on the field of political science. If there is not one general accepted approach to study electoral reforms, how to deal with unrealized reforms? How to study and evaluate them? This paper deals with this question and focus primarily on specific question of unrealized reforms—why the reform was not established? The text introduces two main approaches, theory of veto players and the barriers approach, as its answer.

Keywords: electoral reform, unrealized electoral reform, veto players, barriers approach.

Interpretations of Electoral and Party Competition in a Blockaded System: the Case of Liberal Italy (1861–1913)

Author:

Abstract:
The paper comments upon some interesting challenges stemming from recent scholarly assessments of electoral and party developments in Italy in the post-Risorgimento liberal era (since the early 1860s until 1913). It is fruitful to pay an attention to the renewed accounts of the post-Risorgimento Italian regime as a blockaded and/or weakly legitimized political system. The author argues that analytical implications of these accounts are important for an advanced understanding of the elite-based electoral and party competition and co-operation in the arrangements with a number of informal political groupings. Seen in this light, investigations of the peculiar case of post- Risorgimento Italy could help to enrich electoral studies and party research agendas.
